Further Description
  • Birdsedge Village Hall was set up by the local residents of Birdsedge & surrounding areas in 1969 to provide a focal point for social & community activities within a rural region. The Village Hall was purchased by the residents and is today maintained by a voluntary committee. It gained registered Charity status in 1998 and has continued to provide a much needed village focal pint. The Hall is used by a number of groups which cater for both the very young in the form of a Mother  & Toddler group to the elderly with Monday Friends & Whist Drive. It was decided in 2000 that the fabric of the building was becoming tired and in need of refurbishment and modernisation and since then the committee has been fund raising to complete a major refurbishment programme. Planning application has at last been granted and the refurbishment programme with building work costing £250,000 is now set for September 08. The Village Hall Committee has so far raised in excess of £30k towards this target with further support in the form of grants. The Halls management committee provide a variety of social events for the local residents including monthly quiz & curry nights, craft fairs, Halloween party, New Years Eve party, book sales, murder mystery nights, car boot sales, auctions and a variety of other events. The refurbished hall will allow the committee to provide much needed health & lifestyle events within the area with visiting agencies like National Blood Transfusion, Local authority health services and agencies attending the Hall. Currently the nearest facilities for the area which is made up predominately of elderly is 5 miles away, as a rural area we have a very spasmodic bus service. The Hall is the only community building within 15 miles of the area which has no shop, public house or post office therefore it provides a much needed focal point to keep the local residents from becoming isolated.
